Danby Beacon Race 2012

The Beacon Race at Danby saw a good turn-out from Pickering Running Club.  Conditions were hazardous with melting packed ice in many places along the 8 mile route.  Although Eskdale had not had as much snow as Ryedale received, there were wet and sloppy areas due to snow melt and several expanded streams that needed crossing by the intrepid runners.

Jayson Cavill finished an impressive 9th place overall in 64:27.  Cavill started steadily, travelled very well through the middle part of the race and but for a slight route error late on may have even grabbed a place or two higher.

Martin Connell put in his best performance for eighteen months.  The careful choice to wear limited clothing but large gloves to keep circulation going, paid off for Connell with a strong performance of 74:34 and 16th place in his tough over 40s category.

Mike Hetherton was on good form and came through strongly in the latter stages of the race to claim 1st prize in the veteran’s competition in 76:55.

A heavy-legged Nick Cousins had to dig deep to complete the course in 77:18 but was rewarded with 6th place in category for his toils.  Peter Winter, struggling for form, scrambled his way around in 78:04 and was 9th in category.  Dean Wise completed the men’s team by claiming 10th in his category in 114:01.

Turning our attention to the ladies: Kim England ran well for 4th in category in 79:39 with Lorraine Laycock a creditable 6th just two minutes behind.  These results have lifted England and Laycock to 1st and 2nd place in their category in the overall Cleveland Winter Series.

Lynn Humpleby was 11th in category in 96:10.  Philly Hare almost pulled off another victory in the Ladies veteran’s category with 2nd place in 112:06.

The ladies team event is really competitive in every race.  This time it was Wetherby who triumphed with Pickering coming 3rd.  However New Marske Harriers did not manage to enter a team in this event, which means that the Pickering women have surged into the overall lead in the Ladies Team Winter League Table.
