PRC Club Championship 2011

Pickering Running Club held their annual club championships last week.  In decent weather, competitors enjoyed the mixed trail and tarmac route through Dalby Forest and celebrated afterwards with a barbeque.

New man Steve Watson took top honours  with a resounding victory in a time of 43:25.  Previous champion, Graham Harrison came second in 47:20.  Mike Wilson ran very well to claim the over 50s trophy in 48:47.  Dave Simpson won the over 40s crown in 60:37.  Dean Wise and Rich Howell  produced a grandstand finish with Wise coming through strongly at the end to finish in 67:07 just one second ahead of Howell who paid for his early fast pace.

Kim England will bag many trophies if her current form continues.  She romped to victory in the ladies event finishing in 50:25.  Cath Watson produced her usual strong performance but she couldn’t keep pace with Lorraine Laycock and Lynn Humpleby who had an epic tussle flying down the final hill.  Laycock with her extra experience and rangy stride triumphed in 54:12 and claimed the ladies veteran’s cup for the first time.  For Humpleby (54:25) it was another good performance and she will be one to watch in the younger category next year. Caroline Hodgson (63:11) and Philly Hare (64:13) were the other prominent performers in the ladies event.

On the fell racing front, Mike Hetherton has continued to dominate his veteran age category in the Cleveland Summer Series with wins in both the Guisborough Grunt and Roseberry Topping races during August.  Nick Cousins also took part in the Guisborough race clocking an impressive 60:56 to finish 49th overall.

Cousins was back at Guisborough 4 days later to take part in the Hanging Stone Leap – a 24 mile challenge event organised by Cleveland Long Distance Walkers Association.  Some of the course followed the same route as the fell race but there is certainly a sting in the tail with ascent (and descent) of Roseberry Topping at 20 miles.  Cousins came 10th in a time of 4 hrs 32mins. Unfortunately, rather than thoroughly checking the map, he kept too close to his familiar fell racing routes and actually covered more than a mile extra with a mistake near the end.
