COLD and sunny conditions greeted Pickering runners at Clay Bank West fell race earlier this month.

A team of eight Pickering Running Club (PRC) members turned out for the four-mile dash organised by Esk Valley Fell Running Club.

The course takes in more than 1000ft of ascent with runners heading up to the Wainstones before descending down the bank for a fast and furious finish.

Leading the PRC pack home was Jayson Cavill who despite winning Goathland Marathon the day before, finished in 8th position in 33.50.

Next across the line was Paul Smith who after recently swapping road running for the hills clocked a superb time of 43.35.

Not far behind was Pickering’s super-veteran, Mike Hetherton, who despite his recent retirement shows no sign of slowing down and finished in 45.50.

First PRC lady home was Shirley Tyrrell who while still recovering from York Marathon last month clocked a smooth 53.46.

Also in recovery is Philly Hare who recently ran the OMM (Original Mountain Marathon) and proved her endurance credentials by finishing in 59.19.

Hare also clinched first in category and Sally Brown (60.38) was awarded second in category.

Rounding up the Pickering pack was Lisa Heselwood encouraged by Kim England who both crossed the line in 71.33.

Meanwhile Pickering long distance poster girl, Lorraine Laycock, proved her mettle when she was first home for the Long Distance Walkers Association, Wensleydale Wedge.

Although not strictly a race, many runners as well as walkers take part in the relaxed and friendly events.

Greeted with pleasant temperatures and over-cast conditions, the 23-mile route took in the beautiful Dales countryside, including Aysgarth Falls and Bolton Castle.

Laycock finished in 3hrs 44mins keeping a good pace to finish five minutes in front of the next female runner.

She said: “I ran well but I had several other ladies chasing me the whole 23 miles. I manage to keep them off and I was pleased with my time. It was a fantastic day and perfect running conditions.”
