A PACK of festive Pickering runners gathered for the 30th Poultry Run in Loftus last month - braving cold and blustery conditions.

The 13 Pickering Running Club (PRC) members travelled to the event, which attracts a strong field from across the north-east.

Nearly 500 entrants, many dressed in festive garb, gathered for the 8-mile road race covering a challenging and undulating route.

First home was Paul Smith who made it home in under the hour in a solid time of 57:43 and 100th position.

Keeping sight of his Pickering comrade was Mike Wilson, who ran a strong race to finish in 58:42.

After picking up some speed in her training, Pickering’s ultra distance runner, Lorraine Laycock, finished with a flourish in 61:02.

Veteran ace Mike Hetherton was next home in 61:51- still bagging impressive times despite ongoing knee problems.

Unable to keep up with the plucky pensioner was Lynn Humpleby, who was ran a well-paced race to finish in 64:39.

Simon Tyrrell was the next home for PRC clocking 66:36, followed by Brian Reed in 69:04.

Triathlon buddies Steve Hampshire and Tess Roebuck crossed the line together in festive apparel in 71:16.

Next was Serena Partridge who clocked 76:53, closely followed by a determined Philly Hare, who made a dash to the line to finish in 77:53.

Bringing home the pack was improving Sally Brown (80:24) and Marion Bets who dressed as a Rudolf the Reindeer crossed the line in 94:03.

Although none of the winning poultry prizes were claimed by PRC, a runner from a north-east club emailed to praise the sporting attitude of one the Pickering pack.

Chris Adams from Middlesbrough and Cleveland Harriers said: “I would like to thank Lorraine Laycock who gave me much needed support in finishing the run. I thought I had nothing left in the tank but thanks to Lorraine’s positive encouragement and sporting attitude I found the strength I needed to finish in a good time. Thank you – you made my day.”

The next club fixture will be the Captain Cook’s fell race on New Years’ Day starting at the Royal Oak Hotel at 11am.
