Pickering Running Club were out in force for the Commondale Clart with 20 representatives donning their green vests.  The 5.5 mile race starts with a big climb and then circles back round the “clarty” (muddy) moors.  The final climb towards the end wasn’t helped by the strong headwind but the runners were rewarded with glorious views of the moors with the sun even making an appearance.  First back was Simon Jones showing his speed to finish 7th and 1st in his age category in 40.54.  Russ Grayson was the next back in 19th place in 43.59 with Alex Thornton not too far behind in 45.59.  Rachal Harper demonstrated her excellent off-road skills to finish as the 2nd female in 47.54 with Paul Smith keeping her in sight to finish in 48.05.  Rich Johnson, Mike Wilson and Russell Charlton were the next runners back for the club putting in super performances to finish in 49.10, 50.02 and 50.03 respectively.  Nick Cousins ran with his usual determination to finish in 68th place in 52.19 and was followed by Lynne Humpleby showing her fearless downhill running to finish as 9th female in 57.10.  Not far behind was Debbie Rycroft in 57.41 claiming the 3rd place in her age category.  Michael Hetherton ran strong to finish 2nd in his age category in 58.18 followed by Karen Farmer-Scott also taking a 2nd place prize home.  Sue Slack was third in her category to finish in 63.50 with Tess Roebuck hot on her heels only 1 second behind.  Chris Adams ran strongly to complete the course in 66.38 followed by Mike Punchard in 70.54.  Sally Brown finished in 73.00 followed by Philly Hare in 75.18 taking 2nd place in category despite taking a tumble into a muddy bog!  Last but certainly not least was Hillary Turner in 87.31 taking home the 1st place prize for her age category.  A big well done to all runners as they helped PRC claim the 2nd placed male team and 3rd female team.

For those not wanting a muddy run the popular Brass Monkey half marathon in York was the perfect alternative.  The fast 13.1 miles starts and ends at York racecourse and follows a flat route through the countryside along country roads which were thankfully free of ice although with around 1,200 runners quite crowded.  Ben Myers had a superb race where everything went to plan and he finished in 1.26.08 setting a new PB and running 5 minutes quicker than last year.  Heather Farrow was the next finisher in 1.56.18 claiming an inspiring 4th in her age category.  Jennifer Wise was extremely pleased to run her first half marathon in under 2 hours (and even had 23 seconds to spare!). Mother Nicola Wise was hot on her heels to finish in 2.01.09 putting in the effort to set a new PB for the distance.  Jennifer Buck ran well to finish in 2.15.00 and the group were rounded off by Dean Wise who completed the course in 2.37.31 with a smile on his face.
