Hardmoors 55

Saturday 17 March saw some of the worst conditions anyone who was planning to run 55 miles would want.  However, not starting the race was not an option for the 300 hardy souls who had put in a mammoth amount of training in to get them into the condition needed to even contemplate such a challenge.  The 55 mile race starts at Helmsley with the runners following the Cleveland Way, climbing almost 2,000 meters, to finish in Guisborough for a well earned hot meal.

Michael Todd set off in good spirits from Helmsley and got 22 miles under his belt and was sitting comfortably in 20th place.  The weather then started to turn and the winds were whipping up the snow creating really difficult conditions on the exposed moorland route.  Todd gritted his teeth and kept going through the savage storm climbing up the rankings as others fell victims to the conditions.  He finished in an amazing 9 hours 55 minutes taking a very well deserved 7th place.  Brother Richard Todd also put in a very strong performance to cover the first 33 miles in 7 hours and 29 minutes although he then had to pull due to a problematic ankle.  Adrian Tolhurst made it to 42 miles in a highly respectable 10 hours and 53 minutes before the conditions forced him to call it a night.

Jennifer Buck was the sole female club representative.  She ran very strong although it was a real race against the elements.  It was so cold then even with thick ski gloves on her hands were numb and the water she was carrying froze making it even tougher.  As the conditions got worse Buck very sensibly decided to call it a day after 33 miles having covered the distance in a very impressive 10 hours and 10 minutes.
