Abbeys and Gallows....

PRC club runners took on road and off-road challenges last weekend with great success in both!

The Wise family had a great day in Leeds on Sunday 4th November, running the Age UK Abbey Dash 10k. The Wises joined around 8,500 other runners on this fast and flat there and back route from Leeds city centre to Kirkstall Abbey. Lizzy Wise was pleased to cross the line in just under 50 minutes in 49:58, while Jennifer Wise finished in a satisfyingly symmetrical time of 55:55. Nicola Wise crossed the line in an impressive 57:46 despite suffering with a cold. Dean Wise was pleased to complete the event in 61:57.

Meanwhile, for those wanting an off-road challenge, the next challenging event of the Dave Parry Let’s Run Winter Fell Race Series was also taking place on Sunday.  The Saltergate Gallows race is organised by Pickering Running Club, with Kim Cavill acting as Race Director, supported brilliantly by many members of the club on marshalling and registration duties.

With a new route this year, runners were taken around a demanding course, including a thrilling descent down to Levisham Elbow, which gave confident downhill runners the opportunity to gain an advantage.  The exciting route ended with a tough but runnable leg-sapping chase to the finish. Competitors were treated to the customary and very tasty soup and cake at the village hall afterwards made by the local ladies.  This well-run event was well attended, and raised over £300 for CALM, a mental health charity.

Peter Allen crossed the line first for PRC, coming in 9th overall in a strong 59:15. Russ Grayson was not far behind Peter, coming in 21st overall and 6th in category in 62:04. Simon Rycroft was 33rd overall and 9th in category in 65:45. Rich Johnson crossed the line in 68:22. Paul Robinson put in a strong performance to finish 3rd in category in 70:28. Ruth Kaftirani was pleased to cross the line in 76:20 in an impressive 4th in category position. Mike Hetherton came 2nd in his category in 79:10, with Paul Smith hot on his heels, finishing in 79:58. Debbie Rycroft had a great day, finishing 2nd in category (but taking first in category as the other lady was 3rd lady overall) in 80:59. David Stephenson completed in 82:05, followed closely after by Sue Slack in 82:55. To round off a great day,  Pickering men took the 2nd and 8th team places, with Pickering ladies taking 3rd team place.
