It was a scorcher for the runners waiting on the start line of Bugthorpe 10k, the 5th race in the York & District Road Race League which took place on Tuesday evening. Running in nearly 30c with high humidity really saps the strength. Added to this, the undulating nature of the course with nearly 800 feet of climb, and Bugthorpe living up to its name with lots of flying insects to avoid inhaling, this was a tough challenge. Only 299 runners braved the extreme conditions compared to 459 in the last race and their slower times reflect the greater effort needed. The race organisers and volunteers, also tough in the heat, did an excellent job ensuring all runners crossed the line safely by laying on an extra water station and offering plenty of encouragement. First back for PRC was Simon Jones in 42 minutes 2 seconds, placing him 2nd M55 and 34th out of 299. Kelly Richmond was 2nd U35 in a time of 43:45. Mike Richmond wasn’t far behind in 44:17, followed by Richard Robinson in 44:34, Johnny Everitt in 48:52, Paul Hickman in 51:23, Kirsty Brown in 51:44, Ben Paviour in 52:55 and Dave Owuor in 53:20. Mike Wilson was next in 56:51, then came Serena Partridge in 57:33, Suzy Hodgson in 57:46 and Sarah Beal in 59:33. Paul Robinson relinquished his winning streak in the M70 category. Paul’s time of 59:33 placed him 2nd in category. Lynsey Hatfield was next in 62:43, followed by Chloe Riley in 64:48, Shaun Imeson in 64:58, Carol Wilson in 65:59, 2nd F65, Lydia Adrian in 67:53, Karen Harper in 68:39, Sally Brown in 72:19 and Heather Riley in 79:28.
