Dave Smith ran the Bash up Bessyboot Fell Race in the hills above Borrowdale in the Lake District. This short 5k race packs in a whopping 1,473 feet of climb which means runners need strength and fitness for the steep climb up Beesyboot then need to throw caution to the wind as they career back down again. A certain degree of madness helps! Dave Smith sprinted across the line in 43 minutes 10 seconds placing him 9th overall, 3rd M50. To complete this great race, fell running legend Billy Bland give out the prizes.
It was another good turnout from PRC for the latest event in the Summer Fell Race Series, Cock Howe and Beyond. The 6 mile route takes runners up the 1,332 foot climb out of Chop Gate onto the moors, a quick jaunt over the tops then back down again. Dave Smith achieved a brilliant time of 48 minutes 24 seconds, placing him 2nd M55 and 8th overall. James Loftus was next in 55 minutes 34 seconds, then came Mike Wilson in 62 minutes 11 seconds, 2nd M65, Paul Smith in 63 minutes, 3rd M65, Rich Johnson in 64 minutes 58 seconds and Nicola Thorpe in 66 minutes 34 seconds, 1st F55. Lucy Saggers was close behind in 66 minutes 48 seconds followed by Lynn Humpleby in 67 minutes 30, 3rd F45, Richard Robinson in 68 minutes 18 seconds, Nick Cousins in 70 minutes 16 seconds, Alice Hayter in 70 minutes 21 seconds and Serena Partridge in 85 minutes 45 seconds.
Paul Simpson took part in the SeeYorkRunYork Chocolate Run. Paul completed 10 miles in a speedy 80 minutes 52 seconds placing him 3rd overall and 1st M40.
Boyd Brad joined 200 runners for the Kentmere Horseshoe Fell Race. The 12 mile route incorporates spectacular ridge running along the eastern fells of the Lake District totalling 3,300 feet of climb. Conditions were hot and steamy and it was a relief when the rain finally cooled everyone down. Boyd put in a strong performance finishing in 2 hours 18 minutes.
The final race in the York and District Road Race League took place on Tuesday evening at Heslington Sports Village, the reverse handicap 10k. The times for the previous 6 races are averaged and runners given a start time, slowest start first, fastest last. In theory everyone could potentially finish at the same time. In practice although most finish within a few minutes of each other in an exciting stampede there is still a wide difference between the first and last. Shawn Imeson and Pam Garnett were in the top 30 and were rewarded with a T-shirt. The race is followed by supper and a prize giving. Unfortunately there were no prizes for PRC this year although Dean Wise narrowly missed an M70 trophy coming 4th in this category.
