There was a wide range of events last week with some excellent performances by PRC
Paul Simpson took part in the Turpin Challenge, a lapped course on the Knavesmire taking in the site of Dick Turpin’s demise. Despite not feeling his best and being tired from his antics on the football pitch the previous day, Paul ran 15 miles in a very competitive 2 hours 22 minutes.
Sue Slack and David Stephenson took part in the Cronkley Fell Race organised by Durham Fell Runners. The 11 mile route over the Pennines was beautiful despite the squally weather but conditions underfoot were treacherous with nearly 2,000 feet of climb over slippery rocks and stream crossings. Sue had a brilliant run finishing 1st F 60 in 2 hours 21 minutes. David was making excellent progress until he slipped in a stream at mile 5 and broke his nose on a boulder. He still made it to the finish in an heroic time of 2 hours 38 minutes.
Castleton Show Fell Race also took place at the weekend. The 6 mile route takes runners over the moors with nearly 1,000 feet of climb. Nicola Thorpe was first back for PRC in 55 minutes 42 seconds placing her 3rd F55. Suzy Hodgson was close behind in 56 minutes 14 seconds followed by Lynn Humpleby in 57 minutes 12 seconds, 3rd F45, and Mike Punchard in 64 minutes 24 seconds.
Nick Outram and Mike Wilson ran the Yorkshireman, a highlight in the fell racing calendar. Based in Haworth, the marathon route takes runners across the moors through Brontë Country with over 3,000 feet of climb.
Nick Outram had a cracking run finishing in 4 hours 29 minutes and Mike Wilson was justifiably delighted to cross the finish line 12 minutes faster than last year in a time of 5 hours 17 minutes. Both were also pleased to finish before the torrential downpour started.
3 members of PRC ran the East Coast Chuffer, a half marathon organised by ItsGrimUpNorth. Based in Peasholm Park, Scarborough, the out and back lapped route took runners up onto the Cinder Track, back down into the park then repeat! Competitors were therefore constantly passing each other and shouting encouragement making it a wonderfully supportive and cheerful race. Andrew Bates was chuffed to finish in 2 hour 50 minutes placing him 1st M55. Lizzy Gibson ran with mum Nicola Wise and they were also very chuffed to cross the finish line in 2 hours 21 minutes despite chatting their way round. Lizzy was 1st F35 and Nicola was 1st F65.
The Hardmoors Sutton Bank Sizzler started at 7pm so the 8.6 mile hilly route took place mostly in darkness. Bridget Houlston, returning to running after a persistent injury, finished in an amazing 1 hour 20 minutes placing her 4th female overall. Anna Bailey also had a good run finishing in 1 hour 28 minutes.
Charlotte Dennison completed the Mighty Hike, a fundraising event for Macmillan Cancer Support. The stunning but tough 26.6 mile route started at Alnwick Castle then continued along the Northumberland coast to Bamborough Castle. To make it even tougher, participants were subjected to a huge variety of weather conditions including torrential rain storms. Charlotte raised over £2,500.
