The Loftus & Whitby Poultry Run has been held just before Christmas for over 38 years. This year the 7.5 mile race took place on 21st December in drizzle and low cloud but, fear not, the dull weather certainly didn’t dampen the spirits of the 351 competitors, many sporting festive fancy dress. The route takes runners through the streets of Loftus then up onto quiet country lanes, bridleways, footpaths and a particularly fun section through a farmer’s claggy field. The course is generally ascending for the first half totalling over 700 feet of climb followed by an exhilarating downhill run to the village with wide misty coastal views. All finishers received a bespoke T-shirt, and there were plenty of spot prizes and category prizes on offer including the eponymous poultry.
Simon Jones was first back for Pickering Running Club clocking a very impressive 52 minutes 24 seconds placing him 43rd. Karen Farmer-Scot also had a great run, crossing the finish line in 64 minutes 37 seconds very closely followed by Lucy Saggers in 64 minutes 52 seconds. Erin and Nick Outram followed, finishing together in 67 minutes 21 seconds. Nicola Thorpe sped across the finish line in 70 minutes 37 seconds only 1 second ahead of a bauble bedecked Alice Hayter who finished in 70 minutes 38 seconds. Serena Partridge finished in 73 minutes 8 seconds in her excellent reindeer costume.
Great fun was had by all in this joyous and supportive event, an excellent way to start the festive season.
